The Indian Museum
Jadugarh is the popular name of the Indian Museum and it is a must visit place in the city of Kolkata. The museum has the unique collection of the wondrous components like antiques, armour, skeleton, fossils, wonderful Mughal paintings and mummies. The museum has the perfect collection of 60 galleries and you have all the ancient sculptures and the Egyptian mummies belonging to the medieval period. You will love the display of the contemporary paintings and there is even the sacred relic of Gautama Buddha. The museum was being established with the noble efforts of Asiatic Society of Bengal in the year 1814.

The museum got its design by Walter B. Granville and the museum comes with the two wings and there is a converged portico and this is greatly supported by the Corinthian Columns. The curator of the museum was known as Dr Nathanial Wallich. He was the famous and the eminent Danish botanist. At present the museum is making a preparation for the bicentennial in the month of February 2014. On the southern part of the museum you have the Government College of Art and Craft and it was founded in the year 1854.

The Details of the Museum
This museum was founded in the year 1814. It was originally the Asiatic Society Building. A famous botanist from Denmark founded the museum and it is one of the oldest museums that you can locate internationally. In the year 1875, the new building was appointed for the purpose. The present edifice is an architectural delight and it follows the Italian designed as constructed by the great architect Walter B Grawille. The museum was opened for viewing from the year 1878. Under the roof you have 60 famous galleries and the galleries are of six prime sections. These are sections like Anthropology, Geology, Art, Industry and Zoology. The museum has three planned floors. It is a total of 930 square meters.

The Art Section of the Museum
First it is time to talk about the Art Section of the museum. You will find the art gallery in the first and the second floors. Here you find the finest display of textiles, miniature paintings, Asian art objects and even art products from places like China, Tibet, Japan, Nepal, Java, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and the rest.

You will get to see the textile of Murshidabad. There is a display of the Persian carpets and you find an exemplary display of the Bengal Kantha stitch. There are more things at display like metal images and wood carvings. Mughal, Rajasthani, Persian and Pahari paintings are best illustrated at the museum. Next is the anthropological section of the museum. In this section you will find objects that belong to both the tribal race and even to the non tribal race in India. As part of the gallery house you will find an illustration of the several musical objects.

You can even see the prehistoric antiques from the Harappa and the Mohenjo-Daro Civilization. The notable galleries that you see in this section are Bharhut, Egyptian, Orissan Art, Gandhara, coins and the rest. In the Bharhut Gallery you find the gateway of the Buddhist. There is the exquisite collection of the 5th Century coins and there are gold coins by the eminent Kaniska and even coins of Samudragupta, Jahangir, Akbar and Kumaragupta 1.

The Geological Section of the Museum
The museum holds the massive geological section. Here you find the exclusive 80,000 specimens and these are divided into four galleries. At the galleries you find the perfect flaunting of the precious stones. And there are more things like ornamental building stones, meteorites, rocks, minerals and fossils.

The Zoological Section of the Museum
The Museum has the zoological section. This section has all the insects, fish, reptiles, mammals and birds.

The Industrial Section of the Museum
The museum also has the industrial section. In this section you find the array of the botanical specimens and these concern sections like medicine, forestry, cottage industry and agriculture. These are rare sections to house the best of artefacts.
