The Famous and the Religious Belur Math
Belur Math is the famous destination in Kolkata and it is spread over 4 acres of area and based on the Western Bank of the Hooghly River. This is the famous pilgrimage for people from all parts of the world and no matter what faith you may believe in you can always be at Belur Math to triumph the exquisiteness of the destination. The Math is based in Howrah District and it stands at an hour’s drive from Kolkata. In 1863 the Math was founded by Swami Vivekananda and he was the ardent disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. Here Swamiji have kept the ashes of Sri Ramakrishna and he worshiped the same with dedication and faith.
Describing the Area
The area of the Math is extremely serene and you would love the peace and tranquillity of the place. As part of the Campus you will find the temples of Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. In fact, most of the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna have spent years following the principles of the mission. Here you find the room where Swamiji had his Mahasamadhi. The Ramakrishna Math and the headquarters of all the organizations Ramakrishna Mission is based at the place. There is also a museum and here you will get to see the items and articles having connection with the Mission. The entire area looks great with the green show and peace prevails in all places. As part of the campus you have the degree college, several educational institutions under the mission and a polytechnic. These are areas adjacent to the Belur Math and this makes the place the perfect spot for a religious visit.
Places to See at Belur Math Sri Ramakrishna Temple – This was authentically constructed by the efforts of Swami Vivekananda. The temple was dedicated on the 14th of January 1938. The temple enshrines the religious relics of Sri Ramakrishna. Architecturally the temple holds significance among the other contemporary Indian temples. Here you find the several religious motifs and this symbolizes the lesson of harmony being preached by Sri Ramakrishna.
The Old Shrine – This you will find on the north east part of the Ramakrishna Temple. This is the old and the original shrine. The daily worship takes place here from the year 1899 till the time the new temple came into being. The shrine will make you remember and follow the guidance given by Swami Vivekananda. Here everything is done through worship, meditation and singing.
The Room of Swami Vivekananda – When you walk towards the south east of the Old Shrine you will find the holy room of Swami Vivekananda. This is where Swamiji spend his days and attained his Mahasamadhi on the 4rth of July 1902. His articles of daily usage are displayed here. At the courtyard of the room you will get to see a mango tree and this is where Swamiji settled down to talk to the peers and the visitors. In fact, you get a sense of peace once you visit the room.
Holy Mother Temple – The temple overlooks the bathing ghat and this is the temple of Mother Sri Sarada Devi. In 1920 Mother took her last breath and this is where she was consigned to the flames. The temple stands on her famous departure ground. You can feel the motherliness once you enter the temple. She is everywhere to touch your heart and soul.
Swami Brahmananda Temple – Swami Brahmananda was one of the 16 famous disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. After Swami Vivekananda he has been the president and the administrator of the Math. The temple has been constructed on the ground where the cremation of Swami Brahmananda took place. This happened in the year 1924.
